How to get to Casa Chlorophonia Guesthouse Birding and Photography Garden and Quetzal National Park

We are at San Gerardo de Dota in the Savegre Valley on the Pacific slope of the Talamanca Mountains, not too far from Cerro de la Muerte. On clear days you can actually see the peak from your room!

If you come with a rented car from San Jose airport or from Carthago or the Caribbean side you should drive up on the Panamerican Highway, road number 2. It is not really a highway, but generally a good quality mountain road. The main problem is that there are usually several really slow lorries, trucks and other delivery vehicles which slowing down the traffic with their 10 miles per hour speed. There are no or just few passing lanes and overtaking in the curvy roads can be challenging. Sometimes rain, fog or clouds can make it even harder. Crossing San Jose and Carthago can be painful as well.

So be patient and look for km80 where is a well marked San Gerardo de Dota turnoff into the breathtaking Savegre Valley. Some hotels and lodges advertise themselves few miles just before this turnoff, like Dantica which is a walking distance further down from us.

You need to drive very carefully down on the paved but very curvy mountain road less than 2 miles or 3 kilometers where you rich Miriam’s Restaurant on the left hand side. We are next door just about 50 meters further down, same side.

From San Jose it is a 3(-4) hours journey.

If you come from the Pacific Road from Dominical you drive up to San Isidro, that takes about an hour and from there you take the Panamerican Road and it will be another our or more till km80 where you take the left turn down into the Savegre Valley towards San Gerardo de Dota.

If you don't rent a car, there is also a possibility of arranging a private transfer from SJO airport or from other points to our Casa Chlorophonia Guesthouse. Please ask for details way in advance.
